October Newsletter
Members News
At the October meeting two new members joined us, Mike Entwisle with a 1934 MG PA and Johnny Harwood, with a 1951 Rolls Royce Silver Wraith there were also some other guests who may also join. In September, David Buckingham and Kath O’Reilly joined us. A very big welcome is extended to all. Our membership now stands at 90 members which demonstrates our club has a broad appeal.
Club Events
Our presence at Clonter Opera on 2nd September helped them to raise over £3000. Club members will receive a 10% discount on purchase of tickets for events at Clonter.
Our bucket raffle at Congleton Heritage raised £194 for the Donna Louise Trust. We received a letter of thanks for our donation that I will pass round at our next meeting.
We have received a licence of the Congleton Christmas Collection on 15th December in the town centre. It is hoped that as many as possible can support us at this event given we were not able to do it last year.
The BBQ was excellent however only 85 out of the 103 booked and paid for turned up. Our thanks again to Andrea and Clive for hosting the event and letting us use their executive toilets. The nett cost to the club was £438, which compares favourably with £551 the year before. Two lessons for next year were retained; a) Avoid misunderstanding over the timing of when food is available & (b) reduce the impact of paying for non-shows. Many thanks to all those who helped on the day by donating raffle prizes, selling raffle tickets and cleaning up before and afterwards!
Future Club Activiites
On Sunday October 21st there is a Club show and road run. The road run will start at 10.30 at the Bulls Head and end up there around noon. We would like a good turnout to justify the considerable efforts Eddie and George go to in planning the routes.
Booking Forms for the Christmas lunch on December 2nd, at a cost of £21.50 per person, were made available at the October meeting and will be available at our November meeting. Alternatively the form is available on the website. Closing date will be 9th November. Our thanks to John Baker for making the arrangements.
How far will you go?
We asked, "How far do you travel with your classic motor to a show?"........The answer is basically "not more than 30 miles!"
We found that members from "The Cheshire Set", Sandbach, Middlewich, Holmes Chapel and Congleton travelled as far south as Eccleshall, Mill Meece and Stafford etc., whilst the "Stokie Brigade" from Newcastle, Tunstall, Kidsgrove , Mow Cop & Biddulph headed no further North than Capesthorne, Tatton, or Manchester Airport.
"The Cheese Eaters" from Nantwich and Crewe generally didn't venture any further East than Leek or Buxton although the "Oatcake Wanglers" from that part of our area do travel out as far West as Kelsall and Chester!
Odd destinations do creep in for a small minority such as Weston Park, Bodelwyddan Castle, Llandudno, Anglesey, Salford and Leyland but generally the "30 mile" rule seems to apply.
The reason, again generally seems to be cost!
With fuel now @ £1.34 /litre (£6.08/gallon) and our venerable motors only averaging 10/15 miles per gallon (plus additive) then it will cost £25 per day in petrol to show the car!.£50 per weekend (2 shows);£200 per month;£1200 per season!!! That's money! That's why 30 miles is about right.
That is also why it's not " every show-every day-every weekend."
Thanks to the Brilliant Response to our questionnaire, a lot more than we expected. It proves people actually DO read our magazine!
One member, who will remain anonymous, actually shows his murky brown Jensen all the way at Llandudno (@ 12 mpg) and makes a holiday of it staying at a hotel for three nights. He gets so many "Brownie points" for this from his very understanding better half that it lasts him for a FULL twelve months!!! Should we all do it?
Big thanks to Ray Yates who writes as always in his slightly irreverent but inimitable style.
Is he daring to suggest we are too tight to spend money on fuel going to shows?

Another good turnout for the May meeting and we collected £54 for the raffle. Thanks to all who contributed prizes. Special thanks to Denis Scarlett for the cups that will be used as prizes for club competitions
Terry read out a letter from Harold thanking the club for its support during a difficult time, Diane’s funeral was well-attended by members and is an indication I of the esteem with which she was held. Harold asked for a good turnout of members for the Endon well dressing parade.
In preparation for the new General Data Protection Regulations coming into force on May 25th we wish to make clear that only committee members have Access to personal details. Details of members that do not renew will be deleted if not renewed within a three year period. We do not send out emails.
New Members
Mrs Theresa Shone has returned to the fold with her 1976 Type 2 VW camper van.
Endon Well Dressing
Quite a few of us met at the Plough at Endon on a glorious day despite it being a bank holiday.
It was a first time for me. We eventually got to the car park after a lengthy stop-start parade to the car park. It was a tough test for the cooling systems of some of the older models. There were various entertainments including Morris dancers throughout the day. I really enjoyed it and would recommend it to anyone who has not been.
For Sale
Gas barbeques owned by the club are for sale for £40 including a gas bottle and regulator. The BBQs will need to be collected from
